Frankincense is an aromatic oleo resin obtained from the sap of various frankincense trees. There are a variety of species that grow throughout Arabia, and Africa, and India. Frankincense has been used as incense, perfume, and medicinally for thousands of years. It was used to embalm in Egypt and in Roman Britain, and also burned to honor the dead in Ancient Rome.
Frankincense is used in both Ayurvedic medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and in many local folk remedies throughout Africa and the Middle East.
Frankincense is part of the Burseraceae family, a few of its relatives therefore being myrrh, palo santo, opoponax, and copal.
